The Idaho Firearms Safety Education Committee was created under Idaho Code § 33-1628 to administer the Firearms Safety Grant Fund. The fund provides educational program grants that help Idaho school districts offer in-person firearms safety education courses to primary and secondary students. These courses are developed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, a law enforcement agency, or a national firearms association.
The committee has seven volunteer members appointed by the Attorney General. Members include a member of the Idaho House of Representatives, a member of the Idaho Senate, a county sheriff, a hunter education instructor, a certified firearms instructor, a certified member of a national firearms association, and a parent of an Idaho public school student who holds an enhanced concealed carry permit. Members serve four-year terms.
The committee meets at least twice a year to review grant applications and award grants. The Idaho State Board of Education receives grant applications and forwards them to the committee for consideration.
